Tritons keep momentum going with sweep

For the second consecutive day, the Iowa Central baseball team claimed a late-inning victory before finishing the nightcap off early.

The 18th-ranked Tritons edged Marshalltown in the opener, 3-2, before scoring a 9-1 win to complete a four-game sweep at Ed Barbour Field.

Iowa Central (12-4 overall, 4-0 in ICCAC) has won five in a row, scoring 33 runs during those games.

Jace Davidson, one of just a handful of players back from last year when the season was cut short due to COVID-19, earned his first home victory on the mound. Davidson struck out four over five innings, allowing just two hits with a walk.

"It feels awesome getting a 'W' at our own place," Davidson said. "I just try to pitch my butt off for my teammates every time I'm out there. Our goal is just to continue to get better every time out."

Gavin Baker and Travis Rittenhouse had two hits each with Rittenhouse driving in two runs. Nate Mortimer and Brock Johnson scored twice, and Ben Gallaher had two RBI. Max Holy, Noah Susong and Baker stole a base each.

Kai Reum struck out two in two innings of relief on the mound.

In the opener, Devin Hurdle plated Derek Kay for the game-winning run in the seventh after Marshalltown had claimed a 2-1 advantage.

Hurdle and Ben DeTaeye each had two hits with Gallaher driving in another run. Hurdle, Kay and DeTaeye each stole a base.

Easton Dermody went six-plus, striking out eight with Matthew Wilkinson picking up the win.

The Tritons are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday back here vs. North Iowa Area.
