Strong pitching helps Iowa Central sweep

The pitching staff came through here on Friday afternoon for the Iowa Central baseball team.

Behind strong efforts from John Klein, Lane Glaser, Ben DeTaeye and Kai Reum, the 18th-ranked Tritons were able to sweep Ellsworth.

Scores were 9-5 and 8-5.

Klein started the day off, going six innings with six strikeouts in the opener. After falling in a 3-0 hole, Iowa Central (17-7 overall, 9-3 in ICCAC) plated a run in the second, four in the third and three more in the fourth.

Max Holy, DeTaeye and Nate Mortimer all drove in two runs each with Derek Kay going 3-for-3 with three steals, two runs and an RBI. Ryan Wickman also had two hits and plated a run.

"We were able to overcome our mistakes in the field," Iowa Central head coach Eric Stein said. "We got some great efforts on the mound and, at least in the first game, we were smart on the bases and manufactured runs battling the wind."

Mortimer, DeTaeye and Holy all had a double as the Tritons stole seven bases.

DeTaeye took the mound in the second game, pitching five innings with seven strikeouts and no earned runs allowed on four hits. Reum pitched the final four, striking out seven with just one of the four runs scored being earned.

Iowa Central was able to overcome six errors.

"We just had one mistake and that led to another and another," Stein said. "Baseball is funny in that when you don't want the ball hit to you, it tends to find you."

The Tritons stole another four bases with Wickman driving in three. Holy scored twice and drove in a pair, Kay had two RBI and Ben Gallaher scored twice.

Another doubleheader with Ellsworth is set for Saturday with first-pitch set for noon.
