Strong pitching helps Tritons score sweep

The Iowa Central baseball team finished off a four-game weekend sweep of Southwestern here Sunday at Ed Barbour Field.

Scores were 6-4 and 8-3 in favor of the Tritons.

Following two wins on Saturday, Eric Stein's club continued the momentum behind strong efforts on the mound by Easton Dermody and the returning Jace Davidson.

Dermody went all seven innings in the opener, striking out four with no earned runs allowed. Davidson, who missed time with a blister issue recently, pitched seven innings in the second game, striking out five with just one walk.

"Our guys competed," Stein said. "They did a better job of competing for every pitch in all four games. We struggled with that against Iowa Western, so it was good to see us improve there."

Ryan Wickman sparked the offense in the opener, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a double while Jack Sievers added two hits. Brock Johnson, Sievers and Derek Kay each drove in a run with Ben DeTaeye adding a stolen base.

Ben Gallaher and Max Holy drew two walks against Southwestern pitchers with Gavin Baker also reaching on a walk.

In the second game, Wickman, Baker, Johnson and Kay each recorded two hits with Holy and Sievers driving in a pair. Holy had a triple while Kay, Johnson, Wickman and Baker delivered doubles.

"It was good getting some guys back like Jace, Gavin and Ben," Stein said. "On Saturday we got Devon Schewe back and he looked good in his inning of work. You could just tell we had a nice spark with those returns."

Kai Reum struck out two and Baker one in two innings of work on the mound to complete the weekend.

The Tritons return to action Wednesday when they host Indian Hills at 1 p.m.
