Iowa Central takes conference opening series

The 13th-ranked Iowa Central baseball team won their ICCAC opening series with Southeastern here at Ed Barbour Field this weekend.

After claiming the first game on Saturday, the Tritons split with the No. 18 Blackhawks.

Southeastern claimed the opener Sunday, 6-4, with Iowa Central winning the nightcap, 9-3.

Easton Dermody struck out six to earn the win on the mound as Caleb Corbin hit two home runs on the day. Jalen Martinez finished with four hits and two runs, with Max Holy recording two hits, three walks, two runs and an RBI in the doubleheader.

Kai Reum pitched the final three innings of the nightcap to secure the save, striking out two batters.

"It was good to see us rebound from losing the first game," Iowa Central head coach Eric Stein said. "We just didn't have it going in the opener. But we showed our experience by bouncing back.

"We still have a lot of things we need to work on and that showed Sunday."

John Klein struck out eight on the mound, allowing four hits over five innings. Martinez and Corbin each had two hits in the opener.

Nick Baker was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run in the win, with Holy, Martinez and Trey Morris each having two hits. Corbin drove in four.

Iowa Central is set for a doubleheader back here on Wednesday vs. Iowa Lakes beginning at noon.
