Amanda Murphy is entering her 16th season as the head cheer coach at Iowa Central Community College. Murphy started the competitive cheer program from the ground up and has built the cheer program at Iowa Central into one of the best small college cheer programs in the country. Murphy was the first female head coach in school history to win a national championship at the tradition-rich athletic program at Iowa Central Community College.

Under Murphy’s guidance, the Tritons have been consistently one of the best NCA cheer programs in the country. In 2021, the Tritons won their second NCA National Championship winning the NCA Intermediate Large Coed Open National Championship. In 2018, the Tritons won their first-ever NCA National Championship with their Large Coed squad winning the Intermediate Junior College Division. Iowa Central is the only college cheer program ever to win an NCA National Championship from the state of Iowa. Since 2014, the Tritons have had 11 Top-4 finishes at NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida in four different divisions with three fourth place finishes, a third place team finish, five national runners-ups finishes and two national championships respectively.

From 2007-2015 and 2018-2019, Murphy and the Tritons competed at Cheer Ltd. Nationals at CANAM in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In 11 seasons attending this event, the Tritons have won an impressive six national championships. In 2018 and 2019, Murphy led both our Large Coed and All-Girl squads to back-to-back national championships. In 2015, Murphy led the Tritons to their only Small Coed national championship in school history. In 2014, the Tritons won the school’s first national championship in school history, claiming the large coed division. Murphy’s other team success at Cheer Ltd. Nationals at CANAM in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina includes four national runner-up squads (2007, 2009, 2013, 2015), two fourth place finishes (2010, 2012) and a fifth (2008) and a sixth place finish (2011) respectively.

Under Murphy’s guidance, the Tritons have been very successful at regional competitions. The Tritons won the Jamfest Cheer Super Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2016, winning the Large Coed Division. In 2017, the Tritons returned to Jamfest Cheer Super Nationals and won with both its Large Coed and All-Girl squads. The Tritons won six consecutive COA Mid America National Championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and in 2012 were Grand Champions. In 2013, Coach Murphy was named one of COA’s top coaches. In 2012, the Tritons were winners of the Rolling Prairie Challenge and Cheer Ltd. Nationals at CANAM International Level 6 Division. The Tritons won their first cheer competition in 2011 by winning the Valentines Classic. They were later crown Grand Champions at that competition.

Murphy is certified by the USA Cheer National Safety Credential, USASF, and IASF.

Under Murphy, the Tritons have hosted several successful camps, clinics, and competitions. The most successful competition would be Triton Challenge which has grown as one of the biggest and most respected competitions in the State of Iowa.

Murphy works as the Assistant to the Athletic Director at Iowa Central. Murphy graduated from Iowa State University in 2005 with a degree in Business Management. She lives in Callender, IA with her husband Mitch and their son Memphis.
