Tritons capture Kinney Cup, upset Iowa Western

After nearly a decade of coming up short vs. Iowa Western, the Iowa Central football team took care of business Saturday on a rainy day inside Dodger Stadium.

Demarcus Irons accounted for three touchdowns and over 200 yards of total offense, Colin Swygman knocked in two field goals and Rashad Witty recovered a late onside kick attempt, as the No. 14 Tritons downed the second-ranked Reivers, 28-26.

With the win, Iowa Central (1-1, 1-1) claimed the Kinney Cup, a traveling trophy named in honor of both Triton school president Dr. Dan Kinney and his father, Dr. Dan Kinney, the president at Iowa Western.

""This is big for Dr. Kinney to get the Kinney Cup back," said Montalto, who earned his first victory over the Reivers and head coach Scott Strohmeier in six tries. "He is a big part of the success we have here and that makes this win even more special."

Irons hit on 13 of 20 passes for 158 yards, running for 44 more yards and two scores. He found Terrell Carey on a 22-yard touchdown strike in the fourth.

Swygman kicked through field goals from 35 and 37 yards, adding two extra points. The Triton defense also recorded a safety, as Dijion Walls picked off two passes.

"They brought it to us, but we brought more," Irons said. "It was a tough, physical game. They are a good team, but we are better and we proved that."

Kurt Taylor ran for 81 yards, Jatoviay Hill added 20 and Tanarious Achan led the receivers with 74 yards on five receptions.

The Tritons host Coffeyville next Saturday, September 7 at Dodger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
