Smith headed to Buena Vista Hall of Fame

Ben Smith will add another title to his incredible resume later this year.

Smith, a former Iowa Central standout, will be part of the Buena Vista Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2020.

The school will honor Smith along with Mike Schimp, Eric Bertelsen, Margo Hansen and the 1986 wrestling team during part of the Homecoming 2020 festivities on Saturday, October 10 in Storm Lake.

Smith shined as both a member of the football team as well as the track & field program at Buena Vista.

On the gridiron, he became one of the storied running backs in program history and still holds the single-season rushing record of 1,583 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior in 1999.

Following that season he was named a first team All-American by the Football Gazette and was the D3 All-Star Game MVP. He also succeeded in the classroom, earning first team Academic All-American accolades as a senior.

On the track, Smith was a part of the conference championship 4x200 meter relay team in 1999 and finished his career ranked in the top-10 all-time of four different events in program history. He was also a two-time academic all-conference selection.

During his time as a Triton, Smith was a member of the football team and the lead in two musicals. He is the current Sac County Attorney and a Major in the Iowa Army National Guard.

In 2015, Iowa Central inducted Smith into the Triton Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.
