Iowa Central dominates Ellsworth, 62-20

The Iowa Central football team put a cap on a big week by posting a decisive 62-20 victory over Ellsworth here Saturday at Dodger Stadium.

The win secured a runner-up finish in the ICCAC for the Tritons, who will host the Graphic Edge Bowl against New Mexico JC on May 29 to close out the year on their home turf.

Byron Jarrett led four first half scoring drives, including a touchdown pass to Desna Washington. Jayce Levy also threw a TD pass to Washington on a trick play designed and put in by Jesse Montalto to "keep the game fun" for his team.

"It's tough when you have high expectations and have some struggles," Montalto said. "We wanted to keep it fun for the guys and get back to enjoying football."

Jarrett threw for 126 yards and ran for another 51 in just over a half of play. Zach Marker came on and led three fourth quarter scoring drives.

Jadon Washington got the scoring started with a 5-yard burst to the end zone in the first quarter. The Levy-to-Desna Washington 48-yard scoring strike followed with Daylen Boddie making it 21-0 midway through the second with a TD run of his own.

Ellsworth took advantage of an Iowa Central mistake, as Jonathan Forson picked off a pass and returned it for six. The Panthers also converted the two-point attempt.

Just before halftime, Jarrett completed a 19-yard pass to Desna Washington for his second score of the day. Jarrett threw for 126 yards to five different receivers in the first 30 minutes.

Jaace Weidemann recorded his first touchdown as a Triton in the third quarter, adding a second in the fourth. Major Williams picked off a pass and returned it for a score with Bilhal Kone recovering a fumble for another touchdown.

Alex Gully got his first collegiate touchdown.

"It was great that we were able to get so many guys in," Montalto said. "They work hard, and with no junior varsity schedule this spring, it was good to see them get a chance to compete. This gave them the opportunity to show us what they can do going into these last few games and the coming fall."

The contest was delayed twice by lightning in the area, each time putting things on pause for 30 minutes in the third quarter.

Malik Adams, Dylan Cain, Tristin Waugh and Ryan Johnson all had a sack on defense for the Tritons, who close out the regular season next Saturday in Fayette against ASA Miami.
