Baker's 22 leads Tritons to home win

Josh Baker scored 22 points, Bo Barber 18 and Javonte Keck 17 as the Iowa Central men posted a 98-71 victory over the Mount Mercy JV here Thursday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Baker had another double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with three steals on 50-percent shooting from the field.

Kevin Taylor had nine points, seven rebounds and two assists, Keck grabbed six boards and Jordan Majeed added 11 points, five assists and three steals.

"We're still learning how to play college basketball," Iowa Central head coach Chad Helle said. "The score might look like we played a perfect game, and in spurts, we did, but we still have a lot to work on. We'll have a few good possessions but then go right back to doing something too fast or out of rhythm.

"When we are in rhythm, working the basketball, making the extra pass and taking the open shot, we look really, really good."

The Tritons (4-1 overall) raced out to an early lead and were never really threatened, going up by 10 during the first few minutes of the game. They expanded that lead to 37-19 on a Keck 3-pointer and went up 47-32 following a three-point play by Baker.

In the second half, Iowa Central kept Mount Mercy at bay as Baker answered a mini-run with five consecutive points. Barber knocked down another triple to give the Tritons a commanding 24-point lead.

Jett Pinneo added six points on a pair of made 3-pointers and four boards off the bench, while Owen Thomas had six points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Kyler Matthias chipped in four points.

Baker, a freshman, has now scored 40 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in his last two games. He's reached double figures in scoring three times and has at least six rebounds in four of five games.

"Josh is playing pretty good right now," Helle said. "He still has room for consistency in his game. Honestly, his numbers are really good, but if he made a few more easy baskets, they would be even better."

Iowa Central returns to action on Wednesday when they host Minnesota West at 7 p.m.
