Iowa Central rallies past Northeast, 75-64

Javonte Keck continued his strong play, scoring 30 points to lift the Iowa Central men past Northeast here Wednesday night, 75-64.

Keck added nine rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots as the Tritons 10-9 on the year and 2-4 in the ICCAC.

"We needed this one," Iowa Central head coach Chad Helle said. "It wasn't always pretty and we've still got a lot of things to work on, but it was good for the team to get a win.

"Javonte had another big game, which was what we need - and expect - out of him. He's a big-time player and he played that way (Wednesday night)."

Jordan Majeed added 13 points with five assists and Kyler Matthias knocked down four 3-pointers, scoring 12, as Iowa Central used a 42-point second half to overcome a three-point halftime deficit.

The Tritons gained control of the contest right out of the gates after halftime, putting together a 10-2 run in the first four minutes. That expanded into a 23-4 scoring burst that gave Iowa Central a 56-40 lead.

"Right there, that was our best kind of basketball," Helle said. "We were playing smart on defense, moving the ball and not turning it over. Guys looked to make the next pass and found the open shooter. And when we got out in transition, we finished.

"We just have to do that more."

Northeast tried to slowly cut into the deficit, getting it down before Keck and Majeed were able to seal the victory.

For the Hawks, Jared Lopez had 23 points and Evan Decker 13.

Josh Baker chipped in eight points, six rebounds and a steal for the Tritons, with Cole Tunender adding five points and four rebounds.

Iowa Central heads to Council Bluffs to face Iowa Western on Saturday at 3 p.m.
