Iowa Central fights past Southwestern

Needing a big bucket, the Iowa Central men relied on Jordan Majeed and Javonte Keck to come through.

Majeed scored 20 points and Keck 10 as the Tritons rallied for a 55-49 victory over Southwestern here Tuesday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

A big 3-pointer by Majeed made it 51-47 in favor of Iowa Central (11-9 overall, 3-4 in ICCAC) and Keck had a dunk that brought the fans to their feet.

"Grind and find a way," Iowa Central head coach Chad Helle said. "That's what we did and that's how we have to play. The biggest thing I was happy about was that we stayed the course and didn't hit the panic button.

"Earlier this year, we might have hit that panic button, but we played smart and were able to answer."

Southwestern (6-11, 1-5) led by nine early thanks to a 12-2 and were up 31-29 at the half. Brance Baker had 15 points and Devin Tomlinson 12 to lead the way.

Majeed gave the Tritons the lead for good with a pair of free throws at the five-minute mark. Both Majeed and Keck had five rebounds each, with Majeed adding five assists.

Kael Stulo had six points, five assists and two rebounds, while Kevin Taylor added nine points and nine boards.

"Hopefully, this win gives us something we can rely on down the road," Helle said. "I feel like this was a game where we showed a lot of mental toughness."
