Iowa Central falls in 2-OT thriller

After battling through 40 minutes of regulation and 10 more minutes of overtime, the Iowa Central men were unable to rally a final time against No. 14 Iowa Western.

The Reivers forced the second extra session on a game-tying 3-pointer by Roland McCoy before outscoring the Tritons 13-8 in the second OT for a 70-65 victory inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Jordan Majeed sent the Iowa Central players and fans into a frenzy when he buried a triple of his own at the buzzer to tie the game at 47-all. The two traded the lead in the first overtime before McCoy sank a 3-pointer of his own to tie it at 57.

"We gave ourselves a chance," Iowa Central head coach Chad Helle said. "Jordan hit a big shot. We had several other guys step up and hit some big shots to get us back in it. It's tough to not get the win, but our guys stayed in it and fought."

Kevin Taylor had another double-double, scoring a game-high 16 points with 11 rebounds. Javonte Keck had 13 points, Josh Baker 12 with nine rebounds, and Majeed 11 with four boards. Keck also had three assists and a blocked shot with Kyler Matthias adding seven points.

"It wasn't pretty basketball, but when it came down to it, we made use of everything we have," Helle said. "Iowa Western answered and hit a couple big shots of their own as well."

Iowa Western (14-7, 5-5) led by as many as 10 early in the game before taking a 23-16 lead into the break. The Tritons quickly responded in the second half, tying it early on a pair of 3-pointers by Majeed.

After Iowa Central took a slim 36-33 advantage, the Reivers went on a run, going up 45-41 with under a minute to play. Matthias, though, knocked down a triple and after Iowa Western made it 47-44, Majeed broke away from two defenders and drained the game-tying shot.

The Tritons held a 57-54 lead in overtime when McCoy knocked down his shot.

Dewayne Vass and Sean Black each had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Reivers, while McCoy added 13 and Malik Brooks 11 with nine boards.

Iowa Central returns to action on Wednesday for a non-conference contest with Central-Columbus in Nebraska.
