Strong Second Half Pulls Triton Men Past NIACC

Daviyon Gaston had a huge game for the Tritons vs. NIACC

MASON CITY — The Iowa Central men's basketball team scored a 83-73 road victory over NIACC on Wednesday.

The Tritons (5-16 overall, 2-9 in the ICCAC) staged a furious second-half rally from an eight-point deficit at the intermission. Iowa Central had 59 points after scoring just 24 before the break.

"This was much needed," ICCC head coach Chad Helle said. "We were very efficient in the second half, and a lot of it was because our spacing got better and we worked the ball inside-out. We were attacking downhill and got some easy baskets because of it.

"Our record isn't where we want it to be, but our guys keep working hard and playing together. I keep telling them that good things will eventually happen. We've lost a lot of close games, but they haven't been down on each other. That speaks to the team's (collective) character."

Five Tritons reached double figures, led by Randy Latham and Miles Fant with 17 points each. Daviyon Gaston added 14, with Deuce Blake (11) and Chase Low (10) adding to the balanced attack.

Riley Edwards pulled down seven rebounds. Latham (six) was next in line on the glass, while also blocking three shots.

Jameson Fisher dished out eight assists and hauled in five boards.

Iowa Central converted on 53 percent of its attempts from the field (29 of 55), while holding the Trojans (7-12, 3-9) to 36 perent shooting. The Tritons were 20 of 29 in the second half.

NIACC led at halftime, 32-24, and was up by as many as 12.

Iowa Central's next game is at Dakota County on Saturday at 3 p.m.
