Iowa Central continues to hit the green

The Iowa Central men's golf team swept both the NIACC Spring Invitational and the Viterbo Match Play event on back-to-back days.

The Tritons clipped the host Trojans by two strokes on Thursday, posting a 300. Hawkeye was third followed by Des Moines Area, Northeast and Southwestern.

Justin Schipper finished as the runner-up overall, firing a 73. Tomas Ribeiro was third with a 74, Austin Erickson ninth with a 76 and both Joe Forsting and Liam Ross 14th with matching 77s.

"Any time you can get a win and not feel like you played your best is a good day," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "We certainly didn't have our 'A' game but the guys were able to get into the clubhouse with four scores that were enough to get the job done. The guys have been playing very well this spring and it was good to see us have a little adversity today. With the way our regional is stacked up, it was nice to have some of our guys feel like they were behind and needed to find a way to get a score that would count.

"Very proud of the way Justin battled all day and then got hot for a six-hole stretch going 4-under par to finish his front nine with 33. He also had a bit of an unlucky break on hole No. 10 too with a bad break off a tree and going out of bounds and rebounded nicely to finish with only a bogey. Tomas started off 5-over par through four holes and got things turned around with five birdies coming in. We know he has that talent and is capable of doing that, now it's up to him to be able to play to his talent level."

The focus now for the Tritons will turn to the upcoming Region XI Tournament.

"With the weather that we've had this spring, I would say our team is ready for just about anything our regional will throw at us," Graewin said. "It's a great field and I know the men have their sights set on some lofty goals. We'll take a bit of a breather the next couple of days to settle back in after playing back-to-back days and then turn our full attention towards Blue Top Ridge."

Kelly Boleyn fired a round of 83 to place fifth overall for the Tritons.

"Kelly had another steady round for herself today," Graewin said. "She struggled a bit early with a few putts but she was able to find a groove later in the round. The biggest thing with Kelly is her having confidence in herself and trusting the club that she's pulling. When she's able to be fully committed to her club choice she's a really good player.

"One of Kelly's best characteristics is her work ethic. She finishes in a tie for fifth and she's on the putting green working with her father after the round on her short game. It's fantastic that she wants and continues to strive to get better and it's always great to have a support system that she does. I can't wait to see how she plays down at Otter Creek next week for the women's regional."

The Tritons finished the Viterbo event with 55.5 points as Erickson won his match, 14-4, and Ross his by a score of 13.5-4.5. Viterbo was second.
