Ribeiro leads Tritons to another title

AMES - Tomas Ribeiro won his first collegiate tournament and the Iowa Central men's golf team placed atop the standings for the third time in three meets here Wednesday.

Ribeiro fired a round of 2-under par to win the DMACC Invitational. The Tritons fired a team score of 290, finishing eight shots ahead of the host Bears at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Iowa Lakes was third followed by two teams from Central, Coe and North Iowa Area rounding out the Top-7.

Liam Ross was third with an even-par round while Austin Erickson tied for eighth after firing a 73. Justin Schipper tied for 18th with a 77.

"(Wednesday) was one of those days where a win is a win," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "We've got a lot of growing up to do over the next semester to make sure we're ready to go come regionals and hopefully nationals. We had more mental mistakes and at some point, it's going to cost us greatly."

Thanks to five birdies on his round, including three on the front-nine, Ribeiro was able to stay just ahead of DMACC's Hogan Henrich. He had 10 pars to go along with the birdies, firing a 33 on the front and a 36 on the back.

"Very happy for Tomas to get his first collegiate win," Graewin said. "He's been working very hard since he missed out on our opening tournament lineup and has been putting up some impressive scores in practice."

Ross had three birdies, three pars and 12 pars. He had eight of those pars on the front with a birdie.

Erickson finished with two birdies and Schipper had a pair as well. Manning Lane was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Ella Dinsdale shot 101 and tied for 26th while Korie Norris had 116 and placed 32nd for the Iowa Central women. Iowa Lakes was the team champion with Kelly Winter placing first.

"I'm very happy with the progress Ella is making," Graewin said. "She's put in some extra work lately and it's paying off."

Next action for the Iowa Central men will be Monday at the Region XI Fall Preview in Lake Rathbun at The Preserve. The Triton women head to the Waldorf Fall Invitational on Sunday, September 26.
