Another first place finish for Iowa Central

DIKE - The Iowa Central men's golf team picked up another first place finish here Friday, capturing the Hawkeye Fall Classic.

The event was held at the Fox Ridge Golf Course.

The Tritons recorded a team score of 1-over par 289, 14 shots ahead of Des Moines Area. Mount Mercy, Hawkeye and North Iowa rounded out the Top-5.

Tomas Ribeiro was the runner-up for the meet, firing a 1-under round of 71. Teammates Austin Erickson and Justin Schipper were right behind with even-par 72s, while Simon Mitchell carded a 74 and Michel Van Zijl a 77.

"What a great way for us to kickoff homecoming weekend," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "We went into a bit of a funk a couple of weeks ago and now have put together two really good tournaments. The golf course was playing tough with the pin placements that they had and the wind was a factor as well. Very proud of how the guys stuck together and put up a solid score.

"Tomas has found a groove here lately and he's starting to reach his potential. He's done a good job of making birdies when available and limiting his bad holes to simple bogeys.

"Austin had one of the best 72s I've ever witnessed. Three shots out of bounds and another hazard ball and was able to shoot even. Obviously, I'd like him to clean up these mistakes but this round just shows how good of a player he is. He doesn't quit and he is always playing hard for his teammates.

One final event awaits Iowa Central to conclude the fall season, as they head to Spencer for the NorthWest Iowa Collegiate Showcase October 11-12 at Spencer Golf and Country Club.
