Tritons begin season at Garn Championship

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - The Iowa Central men's golf team opened their spring season at the Garn Championship.

The Tritons placed fourth overall with a 943 team total. Justin Schipper led the way for Iowa Central, placing 12th.

"It was nice to have a tournament to get our spring season underwent," Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. "The course setup and the weather conditions made the tournament probably the toughest we've been a part of in my tenure."

The course is the site of the PGA Barbasol Championship.

"A PGA Tour-level golf course and real-feel temperatures in the high 20s made for an interesting couple days," Graewin said. "Happy for Justin to battle his way to a Top-15 finish. He's going to have a lot of good rounds in him this spring.

"We're looking forward to the week off before our home tournament April 9-10."

Midway's Hayes Mason was the medalist with teammates Will Molen and Elliott Smith right behind to lead the team to the championship over Indiana Wesleyan and Marian.

Liam Ross was tied for 28th, Tomas Ribeiro finished tied for 31st and Matt Kruger was 40th for the Tritons. Austin Erickson finished tied for 55th.

The Iowa Central Invitational is set for April 9-10 at the Fort Dodge Country Club. The Triton women will open their season next Wednesday at the DMACC Invitational in Ames.
