Iowa Central shuts out Iowa State, 56-0

Triton Rugby

The Iowa Central rugby team put everyone on notice once again, posting a 56-0 victory at home over in-state rival Iowa State.

Alec Johnson set the tone early, stealing the ball within 10 seconds of the opening kick. The Tritons would go on to attempt eight tries.

"I was happy to get as many guys some much-needed rest going into the Belleville match Wednesday night," ICCC head coach Brent Nelson said. "The short turnaround is always tough and we knew Iowa State would tackle and run hard."

Hawaiian Tevita Faleta made his Iowa Central debut, recording a hat trick. Other scoring tries were Aaron Krah, Rhys Smith, Viance Vano, Pierre Wansbury and Josh Denny."

"Tevita wowed the crowd to some serious jukes and speed, and parlayed some nice passes from his teammates," Nelson said. "Our flankers, Alec and Michael Karns, gave them hell. Karns had 17 tackles and Alec was a ball-hawk all day. I thought Alonzo Williams, Cyele Banks and Hugo Minaar really showed out in their first-ever starts.

"It was a really good day. Always things to work on, but I was pleased with what we accomplished."

Smith was 3-for-4 on conversions and 2-for-2 on penalty kicks. Minaar was 2-for-3 with what Nelson called "a bom from the touch line that hit the post. His run up started under the Active Health Chiropractice tent."

The Tritons dropped the B match, 17-14.

"I felt like we didn't play well as a unit and tried to do things we normally wouldn't do," Nelson said. "This was a really young team so I'm not worried about the mistakes."

Iowa Central will host Belleville Wednesday night with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. at Crimmins Field.

"I want to invite as many people down for the match," Nelson said. "We are going to have some of the marching band and the dance team there to really showcase Triton nation and make this a great experience."
