Tritons handle Minnesota, 35-10

The Iowa Central rugby team put together a complete effort in scoring a 35-10 victory over the University of Minnesota recently.

Rhys Smith was 3-for-3 on penalty kicks and 3-for-4 on conversions. Tony Robinson and Viance Vano each had tries for the Tritons.

"We were battling some injuries coming into this matchup, so we needed some guys to step up," ICCC head coach Brent Nelson said. "I saw some good things from the boys, but continue to see things we need to work on as well."

Nelson was impressed with the play of Dakota Southworth during the match.

"Mark my words, that kid will go as far as his opportunities and effort carry him," he said. "I'm not worried about his effort at all."

The match also presented a chance for Triton players from Minnesota and Wisconsin to compete in front of family and friends.

"It was really nice for them to be able to play in their backyards," Nelson said. "It was really a great day."

Iowa Central also won the B side match, 71-12.

Hayden Detiege was 7 of 10 on conversions as the Tritons had 11 tries in all. Sam Tribe, Mamadee Tullay, Oliver Kwete, Andrew Harada, Malik Thomas, Clif Paterson, Damion Wallace, Reggie Parks, Cyele Banks and Symmir Bivens all had tries. Kwete had two.
