Iowa Central takes on Indiana this weekend

CHICAGO - The Iowa Central rugby team will take on another four-year program this Saturday, heading to Chicago for a showdown with Indiana University.

The Tritons made a similar trip this past weekend, facing Queens in Indianapolis. They suffered a tough 22-15 setback and are looking to get back into the win column with just two matches left in the spring season.

Iowa Central will host Iowa State to conclude the year on April 24 at Crimmins Field. That day will also see a special 7s showcase take place.

"We played them twice in the fall and we have a really good relationship with them," Iowa Central head coach Brent Nelson said. "We've sent a number of kids down there to play rugby and we know it will be a good, competitive match against a well-organized program."

The Tritons were originally scheduled to face Illinois. Nelson said there is still an "open line of communication" to put that match together in the future if it works for both sides.

First, though, Iowa Central will take on the Hoosiers, who compete yearly with Ohio State for the Big Ten title.

"They are a first-rate program with a great history and a tremendous coaching staff," Nelson said. "They are limited a little by being a club program, but there is really good rugby played in Indiana, Ohio and in that region of the country so the kids they are going to be rolling out will be a proper team."

In the setback to Queens, Herbert Evans and Zavier Ellis each converted tries, with Harrison Dalton converting a penalty kick.

"Our goal is to play good competition, and when you can do that against a brand-name program like an Indiana or an Iowa State, that's big for the program," Nelson said. "But our focus is about playing good rugby first and foremost."
