Tritons make home debut vs. Marian

The top-ranked (D1) Iowa Central rugby program continues to lead by example.

Following a convincing victory over No. 22 Iowa State in the season opener, the Tritons square off with Marian at Crimmins Field here Saturday. Both A-side and B-side matches will take place beginning at 1 p.m.

"We're really excited," Iowa Central head coach Brent Nelson said. "Marian is a second-year program that is very similar to us. They offer scholarships, have a full-time coaching staff, recruit and are really on the rise. They are ranked fifth in Div. II of the National Collegiate Rugby Organization, and honestly, I feel that is too low."

The Tritons actually picked up three wins over the Cyclones last weekend. In the A-side match, Iowa Central won, 51-6. They followed that up with victories in the B-side (33-5) and developmental half (10-8) to sweep the day.

"We played really good rugby," Nelson said. "Our returning players did a great job of leading by example and I thought our defense was incredible."

Herbert Evans and Dakota Southworth each had two tries in the A-side win. Harrison Dalton was 5-for-6 on conversions and made two penalty kicks.

Jeorge Brinda, Tony Robinson and Phoenix Twala each added a try.

"Marian will bring a very professional program," Nelson said. "I encourage everybody to come out to Crimmins Field and watch two teams play. Our boys are an exciting team to watch and Marian will be very good as well."
