Dramatic Win Sends Triton Rugby to Big Rivers Semifinals
Indianapolis, IN - Trailing 29-28 with no time left on the clock, there was only one more chance for the Tritons when Takudzwa Musingwini broke free through multiple defenders and raced 60 meters for the score to defeat Marian 35-29 and advance the Tritons to the Big Rivers Semifinals.
Triton Head Coach, Brent Nelson, knew there was no quit in his team. "This was truly a full team effort. It takes everything we've got to play Marian every time we play each other. They're a tough out, but so are we."
Takudzwa Musingwini converted three tries and three penalty kicks, with Tyler Gast, Hlanga Mabele, Jay Gaines each adding one.
The win sets up a semifinals matchup with Wheeling on Friday (11/1) in Chicago, IL. Wheeling is a familiar matchup and Nelson knows they'll be ready for the Tritons. "We haven't played them in three years since our Bowl game in Houston, however, we are familiar with them and their success in recent years. This past spring they were 7s national champions so they will be dynamic in loose play. They also have a strong international presence in their roster with lots of experience."
Coach Nelson says the Tritons will rely on the leadership of Koen Webb, who will be captaining the Tritons, Tyler Gast who is back from injury, and the fastest player on the team, Musingwini. "As a unit our forward pack is strong and skilled. We're going to need them to all step up big time. We are definitely excited for the opportunity ahead of us."
Joining Iowa Central and Wheeling in Chicago at the Big Rivers Semifinals are Thomas More and Principia.
