Tritons come up short in physical contest

The Iowa Central men's soccer team and Hawkeye engaged in a physical ICCAC battle here Monday evening at Rogers Sports Complex.

After nearly 90 minutes of intense action, the Red Tails were awarded a 4-2 victory over the Tritons. The match was postponed from this past Saturday due to inclement weather.

Members on both squads received several yellow cards for fouls during the match, and a late pushing-and-shoving match led to the final seconds coming off the clock.

"We know when we play them it is going to be like that," Iowa Central head coach Pablo Rodriguez said. "That's how they want to make it. That is their goal. We've got to do a better job of being strong and matching that style of play."

Down 2-0 in the first half, Iowa Central's Kirubel Yerga found the back of the net. Hawkeye answered with two more goals in the second half before Kabasele Musengo was able to deflect a free kick from Yerga into the net. Come Grieu finished with four saves while Yerga and Lucas Pollacchi each had an assist.

"We're just two games into the season, and it's going to be a long season, so we've got to keep our heads up and prepare for the next one," Rodriguez said. "The boys worked hard and they continued to battle and fight until the very end."

The Tritons return to action on Wednesday, hosting Scott back here. They play for the first time on the road this Saturday vs. John Wood in Waterloo.
