Tritons named team of the week

Iowa Central Dunks Iowa Lakes

The Iowa Central swim program continues to make huge strides in the pool.

And the swim community is taking notice.

The Tritons were recently selected as the BSN Sports Swim Team of the Week after a strong start to the season.

Part of the impressive collection of swims included a record-breaking time by Billy Cruz, as he posted a 19.10 to lead off the 200 free relay. That time is one of the fastest in the nation regardless of division.

"From a training perspective I'd say it's train fast to swim fast," ICCC head coach Joe Plane said. "Regarding the swimmers, I'm most interested in them being good, respectful human beings who are willing to work hard and be coachable. If they can do that, and respect the process, then we should be successful as a team."

The Triton men were national runners-up a year ago, and the program crowned a national champion for the first time when Emile Lutzeler won the 50 breaststroke.

Iowa Central returns from the holiday break on Saturday, January 11 to compete against Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. They also have meets with South Dakota and Wisconsin-Oshkosh in January, with the NJCAA National Championships set for March 6-7 in Fort Pierce, Florida.
