Tritons cap off banner year at nationals

The Iowa Central swim program showed they are among the elite in NJCAA, placing in the Top-4 in both the men's and women's team standings at nationals.

The Tritons left Florida with a handful of medals, including five national championships.

Billy Cruz earned the men's co-swimmer of the year honor, as the Iowa Central men placed third overall in the team standings.

Some of the other highlights included 56 CSCAA All-American individuals and eight CSCAA All-American relays, one NJCAA record, 25 school records, 57 all-time Top-10 times on the men's side and 44 for the women.

Cruz captured the 50 freestyle title at the NJCAA meet, just ahead of teammate Emile Lutzeler. Last year, Lutzeler became the first Triton to win a title.

Cruz also claimed gold in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle.

The men's 200 freestyle relay of Cruz, Vincent Fletcher, Tjeerd Van Stein and Lutzeler were first, as was the 400 freestyle relay of Lutzeler, Fletcher, Marcelo Busch and Cruz.
