Wright, relays lead strong first day for Tritons

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Lily Wright earned a silver medal and Iowa Central claimed two thirds on the opening day of the NJCAA Swimming Championships here Wednesday.

Wright clocked a new school-record in the 50 breaststroke at 29.14 in the finals after setting the mark in the prelims earlier in the day at 29.51. 

The women's 800 freestyle relay clocked the second-fastest time in school history at 8:01.02, with the men swimming the fourth-fastest time at 6:57.83.

In all, the Tritons had 11 Top-10 finishes in individual events. 

Nancy Olson placed fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.11 with Leticia Dias securing sixth in the 1,000 free at 10:42.80. In the same event, Andrea Gallardo Perez was eighth (11:00.72) and Saige Knight placed ninth (11:05.68). 

Maria Goncalves was seventh in the 50 freestyle in 24.76. The relay consisted of Goncalves, Olson, Knight and Dias. 

On the men's side, Sam Brennan was sixth in the 50 free (20.88) and Kyle McKenzie sixth in the 200 individual medley (1:53.56). Nikola Trajanovski was eighth in the 50 free (21.24), Pedro Aragon ninth in the 200 individual medley (1:57.51) and Brendon Chadd 10th in the 1,000 free (9:55.26).

Swimming the men's free relay was Brennan, Trajanovski, Aragon and McKenzie. 

Action continues on Thursday and concludes Saturday.
