Iowa Central continues to score Top-10s

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Lily Wright added her name to an exclusive list here Friday night.

Wright claimed the 100 breaststroke title at the NJCAA Swimming Championships, joining Magali Mouton as national champion swimmers from Iowa Central.

Last year at nationals, Mouton became the first champion for Joe Plane on the women's side. Mouton swept the three breaststroke events for the Tritons. 

Wright clocked a time of 1:02.86 that included splits of 29.65 and 33.21 for her gold-medal winning swim. She was also on the third place 200 medley relay for Iowa Central with Emily Small, Nancy Olson and Saige Knight, as that group set a new school record in 1:50.93.

Maria Goncalves added a third in the 100 backstroke (58.37), Leticia Dias was fourth in the 500 free (5:14.05), Olson placed fifth in the 100 individual medley (1:02.50), Small was sixth in the 100 back (1:02.83) and Haley Snawerdt was eighth in the 500 free (5:40.34).

Goncalves broke the school record with her swim in the backstroke and Wright set a new mark in the 100 breaststroke during the prelims at 1:02.78. 

Andrea Gallardo Perez added a ninth in the 200 butterfly, Knight was 10th in the same event and Penny Lawrence placed 10th in the 500 free. Iowa Central is currently third in the team standings.

On the men's side, the Tritons recorded seven more Top-10 finishes led by the 200 medley relay. Quintin Tayali, Luke Johnson, Pedro Aragon and Nikola Trajanovski went 1:35.22 to place fourth.

Aragon was sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:53.69), Tayali finished seventh in the 100 back (52.69) and Kyle McKenzie was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (58.32). Dalton Hammel added a ninth in the 200 butterfly, Gavin Hall finished ninth in the 100 back and Brady Ferguson 10th in the 500 free.

Overall, Iowa Central is fourth in the team race heading into the fourth and final day of action on Saturday.
