Tritons compete at home ahead of nationals

The Iowa Central women's tennis team will get in one final tune-up match before preparing for the upcoming NJCAA Div. I Tennis Championship this Saturday on familiar courts.

The Tritons will host Simpson beginning at 11 a.m.

It will also be a special day for the sophomores on both the men's and women's teams, as they will be honored. The Iowa Central men will hold an intra-squad scrimmage.

"Just like everybody else, it has been a difficult year with constant change and hurdles to overcome, but I'm so proud of this group for all they have achieved so far," Iowa Central head coach Jerry Thor said. "But we have more to accomplish and I can't wait to see what we do at nationals."

The women's national tournament takes place May 1-6 in Mesa Arizona, while the men head to Plano, Texas May 17-21.

Recently, both teams scored three 9-0 sweeps vs. teams in Chicago. They are a combined 63-0 in individual matches against fellow NJCAA competition this spring.

The Triton women are ranked 11th and the men are 12th. Freshman Marketa Beladova is ranked 21st for the women with Merlin Bolema 37th and Juan Gomez 46th for the men.

"We've played some very tough teams and I feel like that has prepared our kids for what is to come," Thor said.

The Iowa Central women were also recently named the UTR ITA Team of the Month.

Sophomores for the women's team include Sofia AndradeJessica Jordison, Emma Slade, Rachel Slade, Rebecca Van Der Lee and Juliana Vidal. Sophomores for the men include Bolema, Aleix Garrido, Gomez, Juan Navarrete and Xavier Zumba
