Tritons claim team title at Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. - The Iowa Central men's track team claimed top honors here this past weekend at the Minnesota State Invitational. 

The Tritons finished with 230 points, well ahead of the host school. Gustavus Adolphus was third followed by Sioux Falls, Concordia-St. Paul and SW Minnesota State. 

On the women's side, Minnesota State placed first ahead of Iowa Central with Sioux Falls, Concordia-St. Paul, Gustavus Adolphus and SW Minnesota State rounding out the Top-6. 

A total of 35 new national qualifiers were earned with 21 coming on the men's side and 14 on the women. The Tritons also set five all-time Top-10 performances for the men and six more for the women.

"We had a lot of solid performances today from students in each event area," ICCC head coach Jordan Burkholder said. "The students have been buying into their training and its paying off for them,  with our teams achieving 21 new national qualifying performances on the men's side and 14 for the women."

Six men and five women all qualified in the 1000 meters. Ashley Micheaux and Eleonora Curtabbi led the women's team. Both ladies qualified for nationals in two events with marks that placed among the best all-time in Triton history. 

Both Elijha Johnson and Kelvin Bungei also qualified in two individual events for the men.

"This meet had a little bit of everything," ICCC director of track and field and cross country Dee Brown said. "It is a great snapshot of where we are currently at and what you might expect to see at the national meet, with a few tricks still up our sleeves. Our event coaches have been doing a great job with their athletes and from top to bottom we had lots of personal records to show for it!"

The Triton distance runners return to action Friday in a 5km at the SDSU DII Invitational with the rest of the team joining them in Brookings, S.D. on Saturday for the Jim Emmerich Invitational.
