Bungei breaks school record in mile

Kelvin Bungei put together a strong finish to break a nine-year-old Iowa Central school record Saturday at the South Dakota State Classic.

Bungei, a freshman from Kenya, won the event in 4:04.19, breaking hte previous mark held by NJCAA and Iowa Central Hall of Fame runner Stanley Kebenei. Kebenei went 4:07.51.

Bungei set a new facility and meet record, running his first 800 in 2:03 and his last 800 in 2:00. The time is the best in NJCAA this season.

"It was a great run by Bungei," Iowa Central Director of Track and Field and Cross Country, Dee Brown said. "In addition to a rabbit leading the runenrs through 800 meters in 2:02, the previous facility record holder was also in the race."

The Triton women swept the Top-3 spots in the 200, adding six more individual national qualifiers and two more relays for the men. This was the final regular season meet for the Tritons, who run Friday and Saturday at the Region XI Championships held in Storm Lake at Buena Vista University.

"Our students competed extremely well this weekend as we enter championship season," ICCC head coach Jordan Burkholder said. "We had a lot of students make some big jumps in their national ranking with some huge PR's across every event area. We also had eight more national qualifying performances this weekend, all of which placed themselves in a position to score at the national meet."
