NJCAA, league honors to Bungei after breaking record

Kelvin Bungei was named the ICCAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his recent performance at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic.

Bungei broke the Iowa Central school record in the mile, crossing home in 4:04.19. That broke the previous mark set by Stanley Kebenei, who is in the Iowa Central and NJCAA Hall of Fames.

During the race, Bungei set a new facility and meet record. He ran the first 800 in 2:03 and finished the race in 2:00 for his final 800 meters.

Bungei also ran the anchor leg in the distance medley for the Tritons, helping the quartet post a time of 4:11.1, which is the fastest time in the nation.

The NJCAA also named Bungei the athlete of the week for his performance.

The Tritons head to Storm Lake for the Region XI Championships Friday and Saturday.
