Bungei leads Tritons with pair of victories

Kelvin Bungei and the Iowa Central men's track team opened up their season with eight combined event victories at the Coffeyville Winter Invitational.

Contested as an indoor meet, the races were actually competed outside while field events were indoors.

Bungei, fresh off a strong cross country season in the fall, won both the mile and 1000. In both events, he finished ahead of Triton teammates.

Lee Eppie (400), Chris Levario (3000), Dashinelle Dyer (60 hurdles), David Bosquez Grimaldo (high jump), the 4x400 relay and the distance medley were also victorious during the meet. Franklin Scott, Cassius Havis, Omavi Slaughter and Darius Brown comprised the 4x400 with Noah Friske, Scott, Havis and Levario running the distance medley.

Pur Biel was a double runner-up in both the mile and 3000 with Michael Williams-Davis placing second in the shot put and weight throw. Other runner-up performances included Adam Gruhn (800), Hunter Klimek (3000), Jaheem Hayles (60 hurdles), Nicola Paletti (high jump) and Eliot Cummings (triple jump).

Placing third for the Tritons were Jerome Jessup (60), Dyer (200), Caleb Harb (800), Andrew Wilson (mile), Khalid Mohamed (3000), Ellis Trainor (shot put), Havis (1000) and another 4x400 relay quartet.

Dyer and Hayles in the 60 hurdles recorded national-qualifying times as did Frye in the 60.

Track events will compete on Thursday, January 21 for the Tritons in Cedar Falls at a meet hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. The entire team is set to return to action on Sunday, January 31 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
