Tritons load up 800 for nationals

HUMBOLDT - Five Iowa Central runners scored national-qualifying standards in the 800 during the Waldorf Warrick Invitational at the Humboldt Recreation Center on Saturday.

Kelvin Bungei, Yiech Pur Biel, Cassius Havis, Chris Levario and Darius Brown all earned spots in the national meet later this year. Joining them with qualifying standards were Ellis Trainor and James Mackey Jr. in the shot put along with Jarod Henderson in the weight throw.

"I am happy with how our team competed," ICCC head coach Jordan Burkholder said. "We had great energy and several new national-qualifying performances. Our students set the energy for the weekend by supporting each other across event areas throughout the meet."

Bungei won the 800 in 1:57.49 with Biel, Havis, Levario and Brown following. 

Noah Friske captured the 3000 in 9:01.37, Daqwon Wilson won the 60 hurdles in 8.58 and the Tritons claimed the 4x400 relay. Trainor had a toss of 49-5 for the win with Henderson launching it 52-10. Aries Scott added the high jump title for Iowa Central by clearing 6-3.25.

Five events were winners for the Triton women with Odell Frye claiming the 60 in 7.67, Lilia Alvarez the 800 (2:26.34), Madison Johnson the high jump (5-3) and Patience Heath the long jump (17-4.25). Iowa Central also won the 4x400 relay. 

Hayden Cobbs was a two-time runner-up in the 60 and 400, Nicola Paletti was second in the high jump, Enoch Antwi second in the long jump, James MacKey Jr. runner-up for the shot put and William Richardson second in the weight throw. Another 4x400 relay team also scored silver.

Seconds for the women included Nadesha Wallace in the 400 and Josie Stackis in the 800.

Placing third for the Tritons were Jaheem Hayles (60), Paletti (60 hurdles), Henderson (shot put) and Trainor (weight throw). Kirstyn Beaman was third in the 800 and Ariana Rodriguez won bronze in the shot put. 

Chase Bulten, a former Triton, competed unattached and was second in the mile. 

The Tritons return to action this coming Friday at Washburn University and Sunday at Pittsburg State University for meets.
