Strong opening day at indoor nationals for Tritons

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Victoria Adu's remarkable freshman season continued here Friday, as the Iowa Central athlete claimed a national title.

Adu won the women's weight throw at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The title was part of a strong opening day for the Tritons, as the women are third in the team standings. Iowa Central is sixth overall in the men's standings.

Earlier in the meet, the distance medley relay of Rosalie Fish, Nadesha Wallace, Lilia Alvarez and Chloe Lenoir picked up a national championship.

Adu, from Germany, recorded her winning throw on her final attempt, launching a toss of 19.01 meters. She led from the first round on, with five of her six throws going over 18 meters.

Lenoir added a third place finish in the 3000 while Jarod Henderson was fourth in the men's weight throw and Will Richardson placed seventh. Henderson (17.31 meters) and Richardson (16.53) each had personal bests.

Iowa Central also saw a new school record get set in the 60-meter hurdles as Hannah Connell broke her own mark with a time of 8.31 in the prelims. Connell made it through to the 200 finals with a personal best of 24.22, the eighth-fastest time in program history.

Dashinelle Dyer tied Courtney Lindsey's 60-meter school record, clocking a time of 6.64 in the prelims. Joining Dyer in the finals will be Jerome Jessup.

David Bosquez Grimaldo placed second in the high jump, clearing 7-0.65. That also leaves him fifth all-time in Iowa Central history.

Kelvin Bungei finished off the night by placing fourth in the 3000 in a time of 8:31.19.

Aries Scott enters the second day of the heptathlon in second place and Nicola Paletti is fourth.

Jaheem Hayles, Lee Eppie and Jessup qualified for the 200 finals, Fish and Alvarez advanced to the 1000-meter finals with Fish winning her heat.

Eppie also qualified for the 400 final with Odell Frye advancing to the 60-meter dash finals. Hayles is also headed to the 60-meter hurdle finals.
