Tritons ready for national championships

LEVELLAND, Tex. - The Iowa Central track and field program will begin their pursuit of more hardware here Tuesday at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships.

Hosted by South Plains College, events begin at 9 a.m. and continue through the day. 

Up first will be the start of the decathlon and heptathlon, while field events kick off at 11 a.m. with the women's hammer and men's long jump. The first day of running events starts at 5 p.m. with the 4x800-meter relays. 

The meet was canceled last year with Cloud County claiming top honors on the men's side in 2019 and New Mexico JC earning its third straight title in the women's standings that year. The Iowa Central women were third overall that year and the men finished in fourth place. 

Winrose Chesang, a current Iowa State University standout, won both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs at the championships for the Tritons.

In 2016, the last time the meet was held here in Texas, the Triton women were crowned champions. They also claimed top honors during the 2013 season. 

Barton is the No. 1 ranked team on the men's side entering nationals followed by Iowa Central, South Plains, New Mexico JC and Cloud County. New Mexico JC followed by South Plains, Iowa Western, Barton and Cloud County comprise the women's Top-5.

The Tritons feature numerous Top-10 seeds including Kelvin Bungei, who has recorded the fastest time of the year in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase, and Jaheem Hayles, who is No. 1 in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.65. David Bosquez Grimaldo is second in the high jump, Chloe Lenoir is in the Top-5 in both the 800 and 1,500, Hannah Connell is in the Top-10 in both the 100 and 200, and Ashley Micheaux is second in the shot put.
