COUNCIL BLUFFS – In a challenging year, the Tritons fought hard through adversity crowning ten individual and two relay regional champions at the 2022 Region XI Outdoor Championships.
The Iowa Central women's team had three regional champions while the men's team had seven regional champions. All while having some key pieces out due to injuries.
The men's team was led by freshman, Yared Kidane of Sweden. Kidane scored 20.5 points for the Tritons. He was crowned region champion in the 1500m. Kidane's winning time of 3:49.92 in the 1500m was a region record owned by former Triton Stanley Kebenei. His performance ranks second all-time in school history. Kidane also took second in the 800m and was a member of the championship 4x800m relay joined by Trae Corby, Cassius Havis and Hunter Klimek. Kidane was named the ICCAC Male Track Athlete of the Week by the Conference office.
Aries Scott was a double champion in the Decathlon and Pole vault for the Tritons. Scott earned the ICCAC Male Field Athlete of the Week honors from the conference office. In addition, Scott was also named the Male Field Athlete of the Year by the ICCAC.
Aspel Kiprob was a double champion in the 5,000m and 10,000m for the Tritons. Kiprob's time of 14:32.29 in the 5k event was a personal best and ranks third all-time in school history. Hunter Klimek and James Mackey were also crowned Region Champions in the 3000m steeplechase and Discus Throw, respectively. Klimek's performance of 9:21.86 ranks 8th all-time in school history. The Triton men capped off the meet with sixteen top-five finishes.
The women's team was led by freshman, Britney Brown of Jamaica. Brown scored 18.5 points for the Tritons. She was crowned region champion in the 400m (55.10) which now ranks her fourth all time in Triton history. She also placed third in the 200m and was a member of the winning 4x800m relay joined by Shaunti Longfellow, Chloe Garcia Grafing and Taylor McCreedy.
Nyadhol Thichiot was crowned Triple Jump champion and Jade Durfey was crowned Pole Vault champion. Thichiot's mark ranks her sixth all-time in school history while Durfey ranks fourth in the vault.
The Triton women capped off the meet with 22 top-five finishes. As the Tritons prepare for the 2022 NJCAA Outdoor Championships, top pieces will be returning to action. We hope to have a great showing in two weeks.
