Triton men finish third at nationals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Iowa Central women's cross country team completed their goal here Saturday, winning a third consecutive NJCAA Div. I Championship.

Three Triton runners finished in the Top-7, as the program maintained their stronghold in the sport.

Iowa Central scored 60 points, 47 ahead of runner-up New Mexico. El Paso was third, South Plains fourth and Central Arizona fifth.

Winrose Chesang finished fourth overall with teammate Eleonora Curtabbi coming in fifth. Florance Uwajeneza was seventh for the Tritons.

Iowa Western's Faith Chepengat was the individual winner.

This was the second time the Triton women have earned three consecutive national championships, doing it from 2011-13 as well.

Overall, Iowa Central has now captured eight national titles and finished in the Top-5 each of the past 13 seasons.

Along with Chesang, Curtabbi and Uwajeneza, Lilian Busienei was 11th, Rosalie Fish was 35th, Lilia Alvarez finished 39th and MacKenzie Gaherty was 54th.

Chesang, Curtabbi, Uwajeneza and Busienei all earned USTFCCCA NJCAA Div. I All-American honors by placing in the Top-15.

Awet Yohannes finished in 14th overall to lead the Triton men. Yiech Pur Biel was 25th, Eldad Mulugeta was 34th, Milos Pendic 35th, Chris Levario 46th and Noah Bundrock 88th.

Yohannes also earned USTFCCCA NJCAA Div. I All-American status with his placing.

Iowa Central's men have finished in the Top-3 each of the past seven seasons.

Chesang, Yohannes and Dee Brown were all honored by the USTFCCA as Midwest Region Athletes and Coach of the Year.
