Bungei, Kiprob finish 1-2

DECORAH - A week after winning the Hawkeye Invitational, Kelvin Bungei picked up top honors here Saturday at the Luther All-American Invitational.

Bungei, the reigning NJCAA cross country champion, finished in a time of 19:58.31 for Iowa Central. The Tritons were third overall as Loras finished first and Luther second. 

Joining Bungei on the podium was his Iowa Central teammate, Aspel Kiprob, who finished second. Kiprob, a freshman, had a time of 20:02.59, over 18 seconds ahead of Ian Kelly from Luther.

Zander Cobb gave the Tritons a third runner in the Top-10, finishing seventh in 20:49.55. Yared Kidane was 28th, Brady Hogan 36th, Robin Aguilar-Gonzalez 52nd and Marco Lopez 58th.

"It was a great showing for our men's team, which was nearly at full strength," Iowa Central head coach Dee Brown said. "I'm very encouraged with where they are at currently and excited for their first real test next week in our first 8km of the season."

The Iowa Central women made their official 2021 debut, placing seventh with 171 points. Chloe Garcia Grafing was the top finisher, coming home in sixth with a time of 19:31.

Zinash Valen was 39th, Taylor McCreedy 40th, Mercy Jepngetich 44th, Kate Miron 63rd and Kirstyn Beaman 73rd. 

"The majority of our women ran and we definitely learned a lot about where we are at and what we need to do yet to get where we want to be by November," Brown said. "I saw a lot of positive things that we can work with."

Up next for the Tritons will be the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational on Saturday hosted by the University of Nebraska.
