Tritons look to defend their regional titles

WATERLOO - For each of the past eight seasons, the Iowa Central cross country program has swept the team titles at the Region XI Championships.

They will look to extend that streak to nine here on Friday from the South Hills Golf Course.

The men's race is set for 4 p.m. with the women hitting the course at 4:45 p.m.

A year ago, competing on the home course in Fort Dodge, Kelvin Bungei earned individual gold with four of his teammates placing in the Top-10. Bungei would go on to win the national championship soon after as the Tritons also won team gold.

Iowa Central has captured each of the past eight region crowns on the men's side, but on the women's, they are the 17-time defending meet champions.

Four of the Top-5 placings last fall were held by Triton runners, with two more finishing in the Top-10.

In terms of the latest rankings, Iowa Central is first on the men's side with Iowa Western sixth and Indian Hills 11th. Bungei has been joined by freshman Aspel Kiprob at the forefront this year, with Kiprob first and Bungei second at the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational recently.

In the women's ratings, Iowa Western is second and Iowa Central third with Indian Hills checking in at No. 14.

The NJCAA Championships take place Saturday, November 13 in Richmond, Virginia.
