Triton Cross Country Donates to UnityPoint Health
Since their first donation to UnityPoint Health in 2007, Triton Cross Country has continued to focus their fundraising efforts toward helping those in our communities who are battling cancer.
On Wednesday (2/26), they presented $4000 to UnityPoint – Fort Dodge. With this year's donation, they have now raised $36,200 in their 18 years of giving back.
"This was the largest donation in our 18 years," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field, Dee Brown. "It's exciting to see that total grow each year. It's been a lot of fun because our athletes do the majority of the work."
Cross County members raise the proceeds by hosting Webster City's Firecracker 5K each July, selling "Race to Erase Breast Cancer" t-shirts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October and having an Iowa Central employee "Jeans Day".
"Our athletes came up with about five different t-shirt designs this year and we voted on the winner. Nearly the entire team participated in selling shirts," said Brown. "In total, our athletes sold over 225 shirts."
Their donation goes to the Norma Schmoker Cancer Center – an approved cancer program concerned with prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care.
"From my perspective it is enjoyable to see our team give back to our community in such an important way," said Brown. "Our athletics experience is so much more than just participating in sports. This is a great example of activities we are involved in to help create better students and leaders for the future."
