Tritons claim skeet title

OSKALOOSA - The Iowa Central sport shooting team walked away from the Collegiate Skeet and Sporting Clays Championships with one title and another runner-up finish.

The Tritons finished first in skeet and second in sporting clays during the event which featured nearly 90 athletes and 12 Iowa colleges and universities that battled cold, rain and wind. The event was held at the Mahaska County Izaak Walton League.

In skeet, Iowa Central finished with 284 points, one ahead of William Penn and four clear of Hawkeye. They recorded 228 in sporting clays, placing just eight points behind William Penn.

"We had a really, really good day," Iowa Central head coach Terry Coleman. "The conditions were just brutal for everybody, but I was proud of how the kids battled and came home with some high honors."

Andrew Troje led the team with a 96 in skeet followed by a 95 from Drew Baxter and a 93 by Chase Martin. Troje placed sixth, Baxter was eighth and Martin 11th. 

Ethan Bazyn, Roy Gerlach and Ryan Branning all had 92s for Iowa Central. 

Taya Myers ended up fourth with a 90, just three points back of the skeet winner. Sarah Sundene was 15th overall.

For sporting clays, Baxter, Thayne Chapin and Carson Feeney all had 76s to finish seventh. Sundene and Myers were fifth with 65s in the event. 

Iowa's collegiate teams will attend the last competition of the season on Saturday at the Iowa Collegiate Trap Championship, to be held at the Stockdale Gun Club near Ackley.
