Coleman expecting 'big things' on the range

Terry Coleman returns a veteran group that experienced a successful 2020-21 season for the Iowa Central sport shooting program.

Now, the goals are set even higher.

Last fall, the Tritons went a perfect 7-0 in claiming the ICCAC West Division title, outscoring Iowa Western, Iowa Lakes, Southwestern, Northwest Iowa and Ellsworth with ease. They followed that up by claiming three national titles in skeet, sporting and super sporting at nationals in the spring.

All three first and second place finishers from nationals are back led by double-champion Sarah England. The Hubbard native won both sporting and super sporting, while Carson Feeney of Le Mars was the skeet winner. Trap runner-up Sally Jo Geckler from Guthrie Center also returns.

"We have a good group this year as we return several great shooters and have added some freshmen that will contribute right away," Coleman said. "We expect big things out of this group as we have several great trap shooters like usual, but we also have added some depth in skeet and sporting clays."

Iowa Central also had third and fourth place finishes at nationals in American trap and skeet as a team, adding the skeet title at the Collegiate Skeet and Sporting Clays Championships to go along with a second in sporting clays.

"So far, they have been a hard-working bunch," Coleman said. "We are excited to get the season started."

The Tritons open the fall campaign with a dual against Iowa Lakes at home on Saturday. They also host Iowa Western on September 7 before concluding the month at Kirkwood and Northwest.

In October, Iowa Central faces Northeast, Grand View, Ellsworth and Southwestern. ACUI Regionals is October 15-17 in Sparta, Illinois.
