Payton Adwell carried the lessons she learned from Rick Sandquist during her time at Iowa Central into an award-winning season at Graceland.

Adwell was recently named the Newcomer of the Year for the school.

A junior catcher, Adwell hit .250 with a .375 slugging percentage, .385 on-base percentage and .976 fielding percentage for Graceland, which was 8-4 when the season was ended.

"With continuous hard work, the right mind set and the opportunity to perform, Iowa Central gave me the tools to go to Graceland," she said. "I thank them and the coaches for this."

Adwell played in all 12 games, recording eight hits including two doubles and a triple. She drove in two and drew four walks with two steals.

As a Triton, Adwell saw action in 80 games over two seasons with 48 hits, 39 runs, 33 RBI, four homers, five doubles and three triples. She also drew 24 walks and stole 10 bases.

"I truly loved my time at Iowa Central," Adwell said. "The guidance, instruction and opportunities that I got from Iowa Central were amazing."
