No. 11 Iowa Central earns split in dramatic fashion

There was no second guessing by Loghen Schnetzer as she stood in the batter's box Wednesday at Rogers Park.

With two runners on and the game tied at 5-all, Schnetzer delivered a walk-off three-run homer to give the 11th-ranked Iowa Central softball team a thrilling 8-5 victory over Iowa Lakes.

The win gave the Tritons (17-9 overall, 11-1 in ICCAC) a split after falling in the opener, 17-7.

Iowa Central head coach Bo Tjebben admitted that he was contemplating a squeeze bunt situation with Schnetzer, a power hitter with "great bunting skills."

"She didn't step out of the box after either of the first two pitches," Tjebben smiled. "I think she knew it might be coming. Well, she made the decision a right one and I'm happy she did."

The homer was the second of the day for Schnetzer.

"I was swinging all the way," Schnetzer said. "She had got me on a couple pitches earlier in the game so I think she thought she could get me again. I just locked in and found my pitch."

Schnetzer's hit came after Iowa Central rallied to tie it as key hits and highlight-reel outs by Mady Lange, Carlie Thompson, Abbie Thilges and Rachel Newell.

"Iowa Lakes is a good team and they really got after us in the opener," Tjebben said. "But our girls just showed so much fight like they have all year. It doesn't matter the score or innings, they just keep battling."

Abby Wilson, Thompson, Lange, Megan Poole and Newell each drove in a run as Mikhaela Muir pitched all seven innings with five strikeouts for the win. Thilges and Thompson had two hits each.

Thompson drove in two in the opener with Kenzie Rosenboom going 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Lange and Allyson Stewart each had an RBI.

Iowa Central heads to Iowa Falls to face Ellsworth on Friday.
