Convincing sweep for Tritons

Much like they did last week on the road, the Iowa Central softball team zoned in and focused on taking care of business vs. Northeast.

Seven days after sweeping the Hawks in Nebraska, 23-3 and 20-2, the Tritons did the same, posting 15-1 and 20-2 victories here Wednesday afternoon at Rogers Park.

Two big innings in which Iowa Central (28-18 overall, 22-10 in ICCAC) scored all 15 of its runs was more than enough for Madison Huisman, as she struck out three to earn the win. Abby Wilson was 3-for-3 from the leadoff spot with a triple and two runs, Paytton Crawford hit a grand slam and Mady Lange, Mikhaela Muir and Allyson Stewart each had two hits.

"We told the girls before the game that we had to take care of these games so we could move on to bigger things ahead," Iowa Central head coach Bo Tjebben said. "In softball, you can't ever let anybody just hang around and stay within striking distance. I thought we did a good job of remaining aggressive once we settled down there in the opener."

Lange, Laila Pelds, Muir and Carlie Thompson each drove in two runs with Lange, Kenzie Rosenboom, Muir, Thompson and Rachel Newell scoring twice each.

"We got everybody in, which makes these kinds of games fun," Tjebben said. "It doesn't always work out like that, but what I liked about playing everybody was we saw some good things from girls that might not always get an opportunity to play. As we've found out this year, you can never have too many players ready to go."

The Tritons jumped right on Northeast in the second game, scoring once in the first and 14 more times in the second. Rosenboom hit two grand slams, driving in eight, with Pelds also hitting a homer.

Abbie Thilges made her return to the lineup and scored four times with two hits, Muir was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs, Loghen Schnetzer drove in two and both Thompson and Newell collected two hits with a pair of RBI.

Emily English picked up the win and Kayla Wookey recorded three strikeouts over two innings of work inside the circle.

Iowa Central, which has won eight of its last 10 overall, travels to Southwestern on Saturday and Sunday for four games.
