Tritons, Kirkwood play under the lights

The Iowa Central softball team came up short in a night-time doubleheader with Kirkwood here Friday.

Scores were 4-2 and 16-7 at Rogers Park.

Playing under the lights, the Tritons (30-22 overall, 24-14 in ICCAC) hung with the 11th-ranked Eagles in the opener as Loghen Schnetzer and Carlie Thompson each hit solo home runs.

Thompson finished with two hits and Madison Huisman recorded five strikeouts from inside the circle.

Kirkwood, who is now 43-10 overall and 32-6 in the ICCAC, opened things up with a big inning in the nightcap to take control.

Thompson went yard in the second game, giving the Tritons a 3-2 lead. Schnetzer also had a homer in the seventh of the game.

"We've just got to do a better job of being able to overcome things that don't go our way," Iowa Central head coach Bo Tjebben said. "We played right there with them in the first game, and one bad inning in the second got the game away from us."

Abby Wilson, Abbie Thilges, Schnetzer and Mikhaela Muir all had two hits with Thompson and Schnetzer driving in three runs. Thilges scored three times and Huisman had six strikeouts in relief.

These two meet again on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. for sophomore day.
