Schnetzer breaks home run record

Even in a shortened season, Loghen Schnetzer has found a way to leave her mark on the Iowa Central softball history books.

Schnetzer, a freshman all-stater from Fort Dodge Senior High, broke the single-season home run record on the same day that the Tritons shattered the team home run mark for a single season.

With her 25th blast of the year, Schnetzer moved ahead of the mark set by Cheyenne Andersen's record of 24 set in 2019. Andersen is also the career leader for homers with 39.

"It feels good," Schnetzer said. "I know we didn't get what we wanted this weekend, but by breaking the home run records, we still left with two accomplishments."

Iowa Central dropped a pair of decisions to Kirkwood on Saturday at Rogers Park, 6-2 and 10-3. Schnetzer, Abbie Thilges and Laila Pelds all went deep in the second game.

As a team, the Tritons (30-24 overall, 24-16 in ICCAC) now have 84 home runs with two regular season games remaining plus the Region XI Tournament.

"Just like on Friday, we were right there," Iowa Central head coach Bo Tjebben said. "We had a couple chances and things just didn't go out way. I'm proud of the girls for continuing to battle, and I'm very proud of Loghen. That is a tremendous honor to have, and for the team as well."

In the opener, Schnetzer, Carlie Thompson, Mady Lange, Allyson Stewart, Megan Poole and Rachel Newell all collected a hit with Poole and Newell driving in a run each. Mikhaela Muir struck out five in relief, pitching four-plus innings and allowing just four hits and one earned run.

Pelds had two hits with Thilges, Schnetzer, Kenzie Rosenboom and Lange recording one each. Madison Huisman picked up five strikeouts.

Between games, the Tritons honored sophomores Abby Wilson, Thilges, Poole, Rosenboom, Stewart, Newell and Kayla Wookey
