McKinney's 3-HR day sparks split

CEDAR RAPIDS - Amber McKinney hit three home runs and the Iowa Central softball team secured a second consecutive split against No. 8 Kirkwood here Sunday.

After falling in the opener, 9-2, the Tritons scored seven runs in the seventh to win the nightcap, 8-4.

McKinney had her third homer of the day and second of the game, tying the contest up at 4-all with a three-run shot. Olivia Harmon and Mady Lange each had RBI hits before Loghen Schnetzer provided the final blow with a two-RBI single.

Schnetzer, Sydney Ballard, Jori Hajek, Sophia Klinger, Harmon, Lange and McKinney all scored in the seventh for Iowa Central.

"I'm just so proud of the fight this team showed," Iowa Central head coach Bo Tjebben said. "It would have been very easy to just be happy winning one and coming home. Instead, they rallied and came together as a complete team to get the split."

Olivia Engler earned her second win of the weekend inside the circle.

McKinney and Riley Gilroy each had solo homers in the opener. Taylor Lee struck out six inside the circle.

The Tritons conclude the regular season this weekend when they head to Norfolk, Nebraska to face Northeast.
