Cummings: "Iowa Central was the right decision for me"

Anni Cummings found herself as both an athlete and a student during her freshman year at Iowa Central.

And that's why the native of Watertown, South Dakota feels ready to make the jump to the next level.

Cummings recently signed with Benedictine University at Mesa to continue her career.

"Iowa Central was the right decision for me because it provided my academic needs and also gave me the chance to play basketball," Cummings said. "I loved the small campus environment and enjoyed getting to know everyone."

On the court, the 5-foot-5 guard averaged just under seven points per game. She surpassed double digits eight times, including a career-high 19 points in a 64-62 win for the Tritons over Des Moines Area.

Cummings had three games this past season where she hit five 3-pointers, finishing with 52 made triples in all.

"Being coached at the college level and playing at a faster tempo helped me develop as a player and prepared me for the next level of play," she said. "College basketball is much more intense than high school ball and understanding that and allowing myself to learn some things along the way helped me improve throughout the season both mentally and physically.

"I'm super excited to continue my basketball journey because I just love the game and I feel that Coach Kruger and Coach Dickerson helped prepare me in the best way possible for the next few years of my basketball career."

The Redhawks compete at the NAIA level and are part of the California Pacific Conference. They finished 19-9 last season.
