Tritons honor sophomores, pick up win

With a little help from the newcomers, the Iowa Central women sent their sophomores out with a 61-46 victory over Marshalltown here Thursday night.

Prior to the tip inside Hodges Fieldhouse, the Tritons honored sophomores Taylor McKinney, Autumn Dykstra, Nevaeh Galloway, Carley West and Nevaeh Moeschter

The five have been part of plenty of success over the past two seasons, including a regional title and trip to nationals in the spring.

Dykstra scored 17 points to lead the way, with Moeschter adding nine. West had eight and both McKinney and Galloway chipped in six.

"Iowa Central has definitely been a learning experience," Galloway said. "I've grown as a person both on and off the court. I got to experience a different path going to a junior college, but the teammates I made are family and I wouldn't trade them for anything."

The Tritons clung to a one-point lead at the half before outscoring the Tigers 15-8 in the third and 18-11 in the fourth to pull away and complete a season sweep.

Jayden Frank, one of those freshmen, had eight points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three assists, while another newcomer, Emma Scurek, added seven points and seven boards.

"My time at Iowa Central has meant more than anything to me," McKinney said. "My teammates and coaches have been amazing through my journey as we've been faced with quite a bit of adversity throughout my two years.

"But I know one thing and that is we have always been a family. I know my time here as a basketball player is soon coming to an end, but we aren't done yet; we still have work to finish."

The Tritons return to action on Saturday in Iowa Falls against Ellsworth.
